Library Notice to Parents: Be Involved With Your Child’s Reading Parents, The Avon Park Middle School Media Center believes parents and guardians should take an active role in their children’s education.  The Avon Park Middle School Media Center also believes it is necessary for parents and guardians to monitor their children’s reading and to discuss complicated or sensitive topics with them.  In today’s middle schools we have students of widely varying ages and interests.  Part of the Avon Park Middle School Media Center’s Mission Statement reads “The media center will provide a variety of ideas and viewpoints that are representative of a free and diverse society through the use of print and non-print mediums.”  Therefore, in an effort to meet all of our students’ needs, the media center has in its collection books that contain material that some readers may find offensive or of a sensitive nature.  Parents and guardians need to decide what is appropriate for their children to read.  However, no one can decide what is appropriate for someone else’s child to read.  Material that one parent finds appropriate for their child may be considered offensive to a different parent, and vice-versa.  Therefore, please note that it is necessary that you monitor your child’s reading and stay actively involved in your child’s education and life.  It is a decision you will never regret. The books we have been able to identify as Young Adult will have a YA Sticker on them.  An example of one of these stickers is shown below.
